The Nassau County District Attorney recently charged Joseph Golyan, a Great Neck gastroenterologist, with collecting Social Security and other government benefits over a four-year period, while simultaneously billing Medicare for care he was providing to Medicare beneficiaries. He allegedly collected over $100,000 in disability benefits, while billing Medicare over $700,000, during the relevant period. The two grand larceny charges are both felonies.
Golyan is accused of scamming a public benefit system meant to provide resources for individuals with real disabilities and financial needs. Beginning in 2021, he repeatedly applied to the Social Security Administration (SSA) for disability and early retirement benefits and misrepresented his ability to work, income, and alleged disabilities. The SSA was tipped off by someone who knew that Golyan was unlawfully collecting disability benefits while continuing to run his medical practice.
If convicted, Golyan faces up to 15 years in prison.
