OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Health, a new health‑focused capability within its generative AI chatbot that allows users to connect their medical records and wellness app data to generate more personalized health‑related responses. This feature represents a shift from using AI for general health information toward deeper, context‑aware insights grounded in individuals’ own data.
What ChatGPT Health Offers
ChatGPT Health lets users securely connect medical records and wellness apps, including platforms like Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal, so the AI’s answers can be informed by actual health information. With user health data connected, the chatbot can help explain recent lab results, prepare users for doctor visits, offer lifestyle or diet insights, and compare insurance options based on their healthcare patterns.
OpenAI built additional protections specifically for health conversations, including purpose‑built encryption and compartmentalization of health data so it stays separate from other ChatGPT interactions. OpenAI states that conversations within the health tool will not be used to train its foundation models.
Rollout and Use Trends
OpenAI’s decision to launch ChatGPT Health follows reporting that a substantial portion of ChatGPT use involves health inquiries. According to OpenAI, one in four weekly users submit health‑related prompts, with more than 40 million users engaging with the platform on healthcare topics daily.
The feature is initially being rolled out to a limited group of early users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the U.K., with broader availability planned for web and iOS access in the coming weeks.
Data Infrastructure and Strategic Moves
To support ChatGPT Health’s real-time access to medical data, OpenAI has pursued both partnership and acquisition strategies. It partnered with b.well Connected Health, a health data network that supports consumer-mediated access to live clinical data across providers, health plans, and labs. It also recently acquired Torch, a healthcare startup that unifies lab results, medications, and visit recordings from multiple sources into one place.
Key Implications for Providers and Stakeholders
Because ChatGPT Health allows the connection of sensitive health records and wellness data outside traditional healthcare systems, stakeholders should carefully evaluate risk, consent mechanisms, and privacy protections. Importantly, ChatGPT Health is not subject to HIPAA, as OpenAI is not a covered entity or business associate under the statute. While HIPAA governs how providers, payers, and their contractors handle protected health information, it does not extend to consumer tools like ChatGPT, even when they process health-related data. The U.S. currently lacks a comprehensive federal privacy law covering consumer health data in these contexts, meaning the platform’s data protections are governed by internal policy rather than regulatory mandate.
OpenAI’s move reflects broader industry momentum toward personalized digital health experiences and may accelerate conversations around how consumer AI services intersect with regulated health data workflows.
